Torea and Honiti are a young couple from Rapanui. They have commissioned us to design their new home on a hill overlooking the town of Hanga Roa and the Pacific Ocean. From the site, the roundness of the earth is revealed at the horizon.
The soil at the site is Hani-Hani, a red volcanic rock formerly used to create the Pukaos on top of the Moai statues. We will use it to build rammed earth structures at the entry of the house.
The main structure is a typical Polynesic wood roof. The wholes structure will be prefabricated in Chile and assembled on site in one month.
Construction will start in October 2017.
